Phonics instruction helps students develop good reading skills. It helps the student map sounds onto spellings so that they can decode words. Decoding words also helps the students to develop word recognition skills, and improve their reading fluency. Reading fluency improves reading comprehension.
Phonics instruction also improves spelling ability because the students learn many different spelling patterns.
